Glass Specification

Building Regulations require that all glass used in movable glass screens is safety glass, normally either toughened glass or laminated glass depending on applications. With an increasing range of glass products on the market it is important to consider all the requirements of the project at the earliest possible opportunity. What are the main requirements of the glass for each application, e.g. burglar protection, thermal properties, acoustic properties, clear or opaque? We highlight below a very small selection of some of the glass types available.

GLASS TYPE
10mm Toughened single glazed
12mm Toughened single glazed
4/16/4 Toughened double glazed
4/16/4 Toughened double glazed low ‘E’
6.4/14/4 Laminated outside, toughened on the inside, double glazed
Branded glass products

Application
Internal or external glassplan frameless systems, domestic or commercial use.

As above but normally required over 3m high
Standard 24mm unit for Glassplan systems, ‘U’ value of 3.0

Enhanced thermal insulation through chemical processing of the glass or use of inert gases in the cavity, ‘U’ value of 1.8 - 0.5

Laminated glass used on the outside to assist where greater wind loads, resistance to burglar attack or larger sheet sizes required, 'U' value of 1.1 when Argon filled.

Specifiers are welcome to chose a preferred glass product, subject to suitability, for example Pilkington ‘Suncool’ to resist solar gain, or ‘Securit’ laminated toughened glass for maximum resistance to cracking.

Venetian Blinds
Inside double glazed units

  • Internal Blinds can solve the problems of excessive heat gain during
the day time and privacy at night.
  • An ingenious magnetic device allows control of blinds set inside
    sealed units.
